Understanding Etsy Fees: What Every Seller Should Know
Selling on Etsy involves several layers of fees that can significantly impact your profit margins. Before you price your products, it is essential to understand exactly how much Etsy takes from each sale so you can set prices that sustain your business.
Etsy Listing Fee
Every item you list on Etsy costs $0.20. This fee is charged when you publish a listing and again each time the listing renews (every four months or after a sale). If you sell multiple quantities, Etsy charges an additional $0.20 for each unit sold beyond the first. For high-volume sellers with hundreds of listings, these fees add up fast.
Transaction Fee
Etsy charges a 6.5% transaction fee on the total order amount, which includes the item price, shipping charges, and any gift wrapping fees. This is one of the largest fees Etsy takes and applies to every sale regardless of your shop size or revenue level.
Payment Processing Fees
When buyers pay through Etsy Payments, you are charged a payment processing fee that varies by country. In the United States, the rate is 3% + $0.25 per transaction. UK sellers pay 4% + 0.20 GBP, EU sellers pay 4% + 0.30 EUR, Canadian sellers pay 3% + 0.25 CAD, and Australian sellers pay 3% + 0.25 AUD. These rates apply to the total sale amount including shipping.
Offsite Ads
Etsy promotes your listings on platforms like Google, Facebook, and Instagram through its Offsite Ads program. If a buyer clicks one of these ads and purchases within 30 days, you pay an advertising fee. Sellers earning under $10,000 per year pay 15% on those ad-attributed sales and can opt out. Sellers earning over $10,000 pay a reduced rate of 12% but cannot opt out. Only a portion of your total sales will typically come through offsite ads, commonly around 10-20%.
How to Maximize Your Etsy Profit
To protect your margins, factor all fees into your pricing from the start. Use the calculator above to test different price points and see your exact take-home amount. Consider your shipping strategy carefully since Etsy charges the transaction fee on shipping too. Free shipping can improve search ranking but means absorbing that cost into your item price. Regularly review which of your sales come from Offsite Ads so you can estimate that cost accurately.
- Price products with all fee layers included, not just the transaction fee
- Account for $0.20 listing renewal on each sale when calculating per-unit costs
- If under $10,000 revenue, evaluate whether Offsite Ads are worth opting into based on your margins
- Compare your Etsy net profit against other platforms using the comparison view to see where you earn more
